 Old
San Juan: A National Historic Zone which is a seven-square-mile district of museums,
churches, forts and other historic sites. Typical of European cities, San Juan has
cobblestone streets, public squares, and even two fortresses at either end of the city.
Old San Juan's two forts:
- El Morro: Built 140 feet above the Atlantic Ocean in 1521, this fort was made
with six levels of gun emplacements and heavy walls to keep out invaders.
- Fuerte San Cristobal: Built in the 17th century to fight off inland attackers,
this fort is known for its impressive military architecture.
Casa Blanca: Originally built for Ponce de Leon in 1521 who died before it was
completed, Casa Blanca is now a museum honoring him and the Taino Indians.
La Fortaleza: Known as the oldest executive mansion in the New World still in use,
this 1540 building is the official residence and office of the governor of Puerto Rico.
The Convento Dominicano: Built by the Dominican friars in 1523 to spread the Roman
Catholic faith to the New Word, this building is now a museum outlining the relationship
between religion and Puerto Rico.
Ponce: The island's second largest city, Ponce was known as an intellectual center,
attracting several poets, painters and politicians throughout history.
Ponce Art Museum: Incredible collection of late-Renaissance and Baroque works from
more than 1,000 painters and 400 sculptures and a pre-Columbian Indian burial ground.
